Today was epic, only in driving. We left Fox Glacier in gloom and mist, so much for a sunrise, and drove along the coast to Haast. We had hoped there would be food there, but the only cafe/restaurant was closed. I guess they don't get much clientele as they are so removed from everything. We did get fuel for the RIG and so it was up along the Haast River to Haast Pass. We did stop for Thunder Falls and a couple other sights, and then down the eastern slopes toward Wanaka, driving along the seemingly endless (like this sentence!) Lake Wanaka.
We were planning on staying in Wanaka, but the weather looks good for Milford Sound, which is not a sure thing by any stretch, so we pressed on through Queenstown to the tiny hamlet of Kingston. We should hit Milford Sound in around 5 hours tomorrow. We'll swing back up this way and explore Queenstown and environs after Milford Sound. Sounds backwards, but we were well advised to "follow the weather" and as we very much want to see Milford Sounds in good weather, well…..
