Allie was here in Nelson about 25 years ago on her way via bus to Greymouth, our next probable stop. Nelson, back then, was a small, grimy port with not much going for it except potential. Well, the developers and second home and some enterprising vintners have come and this place is now impressive. Not only a huge shipping and timber port, the place abounds with folks growing all kinds of berries, apples, apricots, plums, olives, and wine grapes.
We did a morning walking through town, stumbling on a small farmers market where Allie got some cheese they call 'savory' but I say 'no thanks'. We then went out to the village of Upper Moutere via the Old Moutere Highway (which is simply a two lane road). This is a very scenic road with some great vistas and took us through areas that are often missed by people driving the speedy Beach Road, which is much more a highway than road (Kiwis are strange in naming things). We stopped at the Wooliston Winery which is up on a hill and has fantastic views as well as whites and some reds.
I went out to the beach at Tahunanui for sunset then off to bed.
